Valatie Community Theatre History
1926–1970: Our Movie House Beginnings
The Valatie Theatre, originally built as a movie house in 1926, served as a vibrant community theatre that showcased music, theatrical performances, and films. For 50 years, it was an integral part of the thriving mill community. However, when the textile mills closed and the local economy changed, the Valatie Theatre was forced to close its doors in 1970. Many residents from that era still fondly remember spending their leisure time at the Valatie Theatre, enjoying motion picture nights and live performances of theater and music. Today, efforts for theatre renovation aim to breathe new life into this cherished landmark.
2005–Present: A New Era for the Valatie Community Theatre
At Valatie Theatre, we are deeply committed to preserving the historical value of our community theatre: it still features the original tin ceilings and seating. Essential repairs have been completed, and further renovations are necessary to enhance the comfort and convenience for all patrons and staff. These theatre renovation projects include structural reinforcements, the installation of modern electrical, plumbing, and heating/air conditioning systems, roof repairs, as well as upgrades to theatre offices, the box office, and facilities such as stage lighting, audio equipment, dressing rooms, set storage, and a projection and control booth.
Upon completion of the theatre renovations, we will offer seating for approximately 256 guests.
